Hear what some music teachers have to say about the Whirligig games -
- . . . I bought 5 of the Whirligig games from Rose Scott [rosynotes.ca]. They are a huge hit. We all love them and the quality is superb. . .
I think I can piece together lots of ideas for summer, especially now that I have all these wonderful games.
Thanks again,
Brenda [British Columbia]
- Well, a long time coming, but I am happy to let you know what a huge success these games were at my group lesson last week. I took the crosswordy boards, one for treble and one for bass, and pitted my two more advanced 6th graders against one another, challenging them to lay out the notes from their deck in the same pattern as the crossword board. (Had to add a few wild cards to each deck to make it work.) They LOVED the challenge! At another table, I had four younger beginners playing Notewordy from landmark F to landmark G. (Level 1) It was very clear which of the four still needs to work on her flashcards at home. The remaining three were alternately helping her and gently ribbing her, so I'm anxious to see how she improves at her next lesson flashcard drill.
I'll continue to recommend your games to other teachers - may be doing a short session at an upcoming OhioMTA county meeting.
Thanks!

- Renee Yerger "The games really are great! They are colorful and attractive to the eye, and I like the fact that in most games there are two levels of difficulty, so that you are not having to buy an extra game for the next level! I also like the fact that they each come in their own little "zip" packets so that all the game pieces are contained nicely in one secure place. "
"In private lessons I save the Whirligig games for incentives for lessons well-prepared, and it really works!! "
"The kids, (and parents) in my Music for Young Children classes really look forward to them, especially after a very thought-provoking lesson! It's a wonderful way to end a lesson!
One of my younger students said, "Yea! This is way better than those flash cards!!"
"These Whirligig games are just as beneficial for my adult beginner students - they like fun, too! "
"I am planning on using my Whirligig games in my Summer Music Camps this summer. It'll be a good "down" activity where they can still keep their brains functioning, and they won't even realize it! Cool! "
- Lynnette Scharf, Maranatha Baptist Bible College-"My name is Lynnette Scharf and I am the teacher at Maranatha Baptist Bible college who will be using the materials just ordered. We received them this week and I was very pleased with the games - the quality is superb and I was excited to see that someone is finally making a professional product to teach these concepts in a fun way! We use the Music Mind Games curriculum in our game (theory) class and these will integrate nicely with that.
- Melody Bober, Piano Teacher/Composer/Clinician from Minnesota - "Looking for a way to spruce up your studio? Try the many musical games from Whirligig - they are educational, motivating - and tremendous fun as the students review and reinforce musical concepts like rhythm and note reading. The artwork is colorful and engaging, and my students are enjoying every minute of play. The games are usable in private and group setting.
"I couldn't wait to try your games after seeing them at the convention! I give about 20 lessons the month of June only, and several younger students came Wednesday and I was able to try 3 of the games AND THEY LOVED THEM!"
- Beth, from Reedsburg, Piano Teacher from Wisconsin - "My students love the cool colored game cards and easy-to-learn rules. They enjoy learning while they are having fun!"
- Lisa Schroeder, Piano Teacher from Wisconsin - "I am very impressed with the Whirligig music games and my students love them! The games reinforce the essential concepts: counting, intervals, music terms and symbols, and note recognition (on the staff and on the keyboard). The graphics are bright and eye-catching -- they grab the student's attention and pique their interest immediately.
Playing the games has really strengthened my students' knowledge of the fundamentals -- and they're enjoying it. Many of the students' parents have joined us in playing the games and this helps the non-musical parent understand the concepts that the student is learning.
Playing the Whirligig games has also brought an unexpected benefit: I have found that the games have become an incentive for the student to practice harder throughout the week, since we'll only have time to play the games if the student has prepared well for his lesson. This leads to lessons that are much more enjoyable for the student, teacher and parent. It is a win-win situation!
I believe that these games will be beneficial for music students, whether they are played with a music teacher or with a parent. I strongly recommend the games for all music students."
- Karen Hunter, Note-ables Newsletter Editor (January 2004) - "As promised, Sally and Sharon sent me the entire set of Whirligig Music Games. I received them in mid-December, about the time my studio closed for Christmas break, so I was only able to play the games with a few students. However, to give you an idea of how the games looked and “played,” I’m awarding stars in various categories
( * = poor to ***** = Excellent)
- Appearance = *****
The games come packaged in attractive blue canvas bags with game pieces zipped inside. Game accessories are professionally produced and the colorful graphics will appeal to children and adults alike.
- Educational Value = *****
Is it important to reinforce music fundamentals? Do you want your students to have fun reviewing basic music concepts? If "yes," these games are just what you've been waiting for!
- Play-ability = *****
I had no trouble following the directions enclosed with each game. Better yet, students can easily figure out how to play on their own.
- Cost = ***
Admittedly, the prices are steep--$20-$24 per game--but they're worth their weight in gold to the students who benefit from them. Plus, the genius behind the "creation" of the games and the professional quality of their production will make them a "luxury" no piano teacher can afford to be without.
- Bottom line: Order today! Log on to whirligigllp.com for details on how to order the games or where to purchase them."
